It's my opinion, along with many other reviewers and users, that you will want to move from Vista and even from the beloved XP to Windows 7. If your college student has Vista, get an upgrade to Windows 7 for only $30!
You cannot get a better Upgrade deal than this one, for Windows 7 upgrade from a Vista desktop or laptop. Just enter a valid student email address, one that ends in .edu, choose Windows 7 Home Premium (for colleges or computers NOT connecting to a domain server) and choose 32 bit or 64 bit system (see Control Panel|System for that info), enter a credit card and wait for the confirmation email.
